One paper (hand-in in Vietnamese or English)                                        20 %

Group Assignment/Presentation                                                              15 %

Final exam                                                                                                50 %.

 

Mid term paper:

The paper will be two academic paper in English of around 1500-2000 words, of publishable standard (this means a critical analytical paper.  The paper topic is “............................................................”.

 

COURSE DETAILS

Lecture outline

Lecture 1

What is democracy?

Issues to be covered: Liberal democracy and its Critics. The main dimensions of democracy (contestation and popular participation). Can democracy be measured? Multi-tired systems of democracy; devolution of power.

Lecture 2

Channels of democratic influence – numerical democracy and corporate pluralism

This lecture will reflect on different channels of democratic politics, and draws upon Scandinavian  (in particular Norwegian experiences)

What drives democratization? Internal and external factors

This lecture will address the concepts of democratic transition and consolidation, and refer to works of in particular Guillermo O’Donnell, Juan Linz and Thomas Risse.
