Course objective

The module is intended to enable students to: 

1) Understand the theoretical issues and rationale for the protection of vulnerable groups under international human rights law. These vulnerable groups include the following: women, children, persons deprived of their liberty, persons with disabilities, persons living with HIV/AIDS, migrant workers, refugees, stateless persons, members of minority groups such as indigenous minorities and persons who have been trafficked. 

2) Understand the international human rights norms and mechanisms that protect the rights of members of vulnerable groups. This includes an understanding of 

· how universal human rights treaties such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights operate to protect and promote the rights of members of vulnerable groups, and 

· the scope and operation of specialised treaties such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child which are directed to the protection of the rights of specific categories of persons.

5. The rights of persons with disabilities under international law, including the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS.

8. The international framework addressing the trafficking of persons.
